Introduction

The Holy Spirit indwells every believer. Not just the super-spiritual. Not just ministers. Every single follower of Jesus has the Spirit living inside them.

This is mind-blowing. God, in the person of the Holy Spirit, lives in you. Not at a distance. Not watching from heaven. Inside you. Intimately present.

Today we're exploring what it means to be a temple of the Holy Spirit.

I. Your Body Is a Temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

'Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?' Paul uses the most sacred imagery available to make this point. You're as sacred as the temple in Jerusalem.

In the Old Testament, the temple was the place where God dwelt. The holiest place on earth. And now, because of Christ, your body is that temple.
This means your body matters. How you treat it matters. What you do with it matters. It's not disposable. It's sacred.

This transforms how you think about physical sin. Sexual immorality. Substance abuse. Gluttony. These aren't just personal choices. They're defiling the temple of the Holy Spirit.

II. Live in Awareness of the Spirit's Presence (Psalm 139:7-10)

The practical implication is that you live differently when you remember the Spirit is with you. Not in judgment, but in companionship.

Before you say something cruel, remember: the Spirit is listening. Before you look at something you shouldn't, remember: the Spirit is watching.
But also: when you're lonely, the Spirit is there. When you're afraid, the Spirit is there. When you're weak, the Spirit is there.

This isn't oppressive. It's comforting. You're never alone. God is always with you.

III. Honor the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)

'Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.' The Spirit can be grieved. He has feelings. When you sin, when you rebel, when you ignore Him, you grieve the Spirit.

But the solution is simple: repent. Turn around. Honor the Spirit by living obediently.
Honoring the Spirit means taking your relationship with Him seriously. It means prayer, Bible reading, obedience, worship.

When you honor the Spirit, He moves freely in your life. When you grieve Him, you quench His work.

Appeal

Treat your body as the sacred temple that it is. The Holy Spirit lives in you. Act accordingly.

And draw comfort from this: you're never alone. You're never forgotten. The Spirit is with you, inside you, always.
