Introduction
Paul opens with a stunning declaration: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
Every spiritual blessing. Not some. Not most. Every. And where? In the heavenly realms—in Christs presence, in His kingdom, in the eternal reality where we are seated with Him.
Here is the main point: Before the foundation of the world, God chose you—not because of who you are, but to make you holy and blameless in His sight.
I. Blessed in the Heavenly Realms (Ephesians 1:3-5)
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. The choice happened before time existed. While the universe was still nothing but thought in Gods mind, He chose you.
This is not God responding to something you did. You did not exist yet. This is God making a deliberate, sovereign, free choice. Before your parents were born, before your ancestors were born, God chose you.
In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. Adoption—that is family language. You are not servants or strangers. You are children.
To the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. Your adoption is an act of pure grace. It displays Gods glory and generosity.
Paul repeats this because we need it. We need to know that our worth is not based on performance. It is based on Gods choice, made before you were born. That is your foundation.
II. Redeemed Through His Blood (Ephesians 1:7-12)
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of Gods grace. Redemption—you have been bought back. You were captive to sin, enslaved to its consequences. But Jesus paid the ransom.
His blood is the purchase price. This is not metaphorical. This is the literal cost of your freedom. You are precious enough that the Son of God died for you.
He lavished on us all his wisdom and understanding. That is a remarkable phrase—lavished. Not given sparingly or reluctantly, but lavished, like one who cannot help but overflow with generosity.
And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
There is a cosmic purpose at work. History is moving toward Christ. Everything will be united under Him. And you are chosen to be part of that story. Your identity is not random; it is purposeful.
III. The Guarantee of Our Inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14)
He set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. A deposit—the Greek is arrabon, meaning a first installment. It is a promise that more is coming.
The Spirit living in you now is a down payment on everything awaiting you. You are already tasting the sweetness of salvation. The full feast is yet to come.
The redemption of those who are Gods possession—to the praise of his glory. You are Gods possession. Not the worlds. Not your own. Gods. That is your security. Nothing can claim you except the One who owns you absolutely.
Why does Paul emphasize to the praise of his glory three times in these verses? Because your identity is not primarily about your happiness or self-actualization. It is about displaying Gods character.
When you walk in your identity as chosen, redeemed, sealed, marked—you cannot help but glorify God. Your existence becomes a testimony to His grace.
Conclusion & Appeal
We began by asking: Who are you, really? Not according to what the world sees, but according to what God knows.
Pauls answer: You are chosen before the foundation of the world. Redeemed by blood. Sealed by the Spirit. Guaranteed an inheritance. That is who you really are.
Spend time this week meditating on your identity as God sees it. Write down: I am chosen. I am redeemed. I am sealed. Let these truths sink deeper than the temporary identities the world offers. When you are tempted toward shame or insignificance, remember: God lavished His grace on you before time existed.
