Introduction
Paul writes: For those led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.
The Spirits leading is not the leading of a taskmaster or manager. It is the leading of a father to his child. The Spirit draws you toward God with intimacy, not distance.
Here is the main point: You are adopted—God chose you to be His child, giving you all the rights and privileges of an heir in His family forever.
I. The Spirit Leads Us as Gods Children (Romans 8:14-15)
The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Adoption is not a legal status that happens without inner transformation. The Spirit inhabits you and changes your relationship to God.
Abba, Father—Abba is the Aramaic word for daddy, the intimate form a small child uses. Paul says you have the right to call God by this name—not Your Majesty or Your Honor, but Daddy.
Why would Paul specify that adoption does not make you a slave? Because in the Roman world, an adopted child had all the legal rights of a biological heir, but socially, there was sometimes shame or differentiation.
Paul is saying: You are not a second-class child. You are fully family. Not a servant kept on probation. Not a ward waiting to age out. But a beloved child with full rights.
Fear is the slaves motivation. Love is the childs. When you know you are adopted, when you know you belong, fear loses its power. You can take risks for your Father because you know nothing can separate you from His love.
II. Made Children Through the Son (Galatians 4:4-7)
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.
The timing is precise—the set time. God did not adopt you on a whim or as an afterthought. It was always the plan, and it happened at the exact moment in history when Jesus came.
Jesus was born under the law. He fully embraced the human condition, even the restrictions of the law. Why? That we might receive adoption to sonship. Your adoption was purchased by Jesus redemptive work.
He took the curse of the law so you could take the privilege of sonship. Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, Abba, Father.
So you are no longer a slave, but Gods child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. An heir. Not a servant with a salary. An heir with inheritance rights. Your future is secured not by your job but by your family relationship.
III. The Wonder and Security of Adoption (1 John 3:1-3)
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! Johns emphasis is on the lavishing—the generous, overwhelming love that results in calling.
You are not just legally adopted; you are genuinely called, genuinely claimed. The word used is not even adoption but children. Full children. No asterisks, no exceptions, no fine print.
The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. The world rejected Christ, so the world rejects His children. But that is not a failure—it is a mark of belonging to Him.
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. Adoption includes future inheritance you cannot yet imagine. You know who your Father is. But the full extent of your inheritance, the depths of your identity—it is still unfolding.
But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Your final identity is complete conformity to Christ. You are being adopted into His family so that you can become like Him.

We began with the reality of adoption. You did not choose God; God chose you. You were not earning your way in; you were being adopted into family.
