Introduction
Paul begins with a jarring reality: You were dead in your transgressions and sins. Not sick, not weak, not lost. Dead.
In which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air. Death under the influence of darkness—that was your condition before Christ. You could not save yourself any more than a corpse can heal itself.
Here is the main point: You are Gods masterpiece—created by His hand, shaped by His purpose, and designed to display His glory through your good works.
I. From Death to Life (Ephesians 2:1-5)
All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
Paul includes himself. He is not claiming superiority. He is saying: I was dead too. We all were. All of humanity is under the same death sentence.
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
The resurrection from spiritual death is not earned. It is grace. Pure gift. While you were dead, God chose to make you alive. That is the foundation of your identity as Gods masterpiece.
Think about it: God did not wait for you to get your act together. He did not offer CPR to those who were willing to meet Him halfway. He breathed life into corpses. That is the level of His commitment to your redemption.
II. Raised Up and Seated in the Heavenly Realms (Ephesians 2:6-9)
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
You are not just saved from hell. You are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms. That is your position right now. Spiritually, you are already in Gods presence.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.
Your salvation is pure gift. You cannot brag about it. You cannot claim credit. You cannot build it. It is given. The emphasis is crucial: not by works. Not by your effort or achievement.
For we are Gods handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. And here is the masterpiece statement: We are Gods handiwork. The Greek word is poiema—a work of art, a masterpiece.
III. Created for a Purpose (Ephesians 2:9-10)
You are not accidental. You are intentional. You are created—formed by the hand of God—for a specific purpose. Not assigned randomly to a life. Not thrown into the universe to figure out meaning on your own.
Created in Christ Jesus—your creation as Gods masterpiece is not separate from Christ. It is through Him and in Him. Every detail of who you are was designed with Christ in view.
To do good works—your design includes purpose. You are made to bear fruit, to contribute, to build up, to bless others. Your purpose is woven into your identity.
Which God prepared in advance for us to do—these works are not accidents. God designed both you and your works before time. Your calling is waiting for you. It was prepared in advance.
This is radically different from the worlds message. The world says: You have to create your own meaning. Figure out your own purpose. Define yourself. God says: I created you with purpose. I prepared your work in advance. Your calling is waiting. Your identity is secure. Your future is known.
Conclusion & Appeal
We began by acknowledging the depth of spiritual death—not weakness, but death. That is how bad it was before Christ.
But then: God made you alive. Seated you in the heavenly realms. Called you His masterpiece. And designed good works for you to accomplish. That is your identity.
This week, receive the truth that you are a masterpiece. Not perfect, but intentional. Not accident, but design. Write down: I am Gods handiwork, created for good works He has prepared for me. Then ask: What good works is God calling me toward? Where can I contribute my specific design and purpose? Start moving in that direction.
