I. If God Is for Us, Who Can Be Against Us? (Romans 8:31-34)
This is the foundation question. Not Will you face opposition? but Does opposition matter when God is for you?
Paul reasons from the greatest proof of Gods favor: the cross. If God was willing to sacrifice His own Son for you, is there any good thing He would withhold?
Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. The accuser—Satan—brings charges. Your guilt brings charges. The world brings charges. But God has already justified you.
His verdict stands above all others. You are declared righteous not because you are, but because Christ made you so. Not guilty is the verdict that stands forever.
Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Christ is interceding for you. At this very moment, Jesus stands before the Father on your behalf. Your case is never closed. Your advocate never rests.
II. Nothing Can Separate Us From Love (Romans 8:35-37)
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?
Paul lists the hardest things: persecution, poverty, danger, death itself. Real sufferings. Not theoretical ones. These are the things that make people lose faith, abandon hope, turn away from God.
As it is written: For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. He quotes Psalm 44, a psalm of lament where the faithful are suffering even though they are faithful.
Paul acknowledges: Following Christ does not exempt you from suffering. The faithful suffer. The righteous face trials. This is not a prosperity gospel.
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Not just survivors, but overcomers. Not escaping suffering, but conquering in it. Your suffering becomes victory because Christ is with you in it.
III. Nothing in All Creation (Romans 8:38-39)
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul systematically removes every possible barrier. Death—no. Life—no. Spiritual powers—no. Time—no. Space—no.
Nor any powers—no political system, no authority figure, no oppressive force can separate you. Neither height nor depth—the highest places of glory and the lowest places of shame. Neither can separate you.
Nor anything else in all creation—anything Paul has not mentioned, anything you can imagine, anything that exists—nothing can separate you from Gods love.
The reason is singular: The love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Your security rests not on your performance but on the immovable reality of Gods love. This is not wishful thinking. Paul had been beaten, imprisoned, nearly killed multiple times. He wrote this from experience: Nothing separated him from Christs love because his love was not conditional on circumstances.
