Introduction

After describing the war within, Paul drops one of the most liberating statements in Scripture: 'Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.'

This isn't situational. It's not 'when you're doing well' or 'when you confess quickly.' It's absolute: No condemnation.

This doesn't erase consequences or the need for repentance. But it removes the weight of shame, the sense that God is angry at you, the fear that you've lost your status with him.

I. No Condemnation for Those in Christ (Romans 8:1-4)

'Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.'

The verdict is not guilty. Not because you're innocent—you're not. But because Christ's innocence covers you. His righteousness is your righteousness.

The law condemned you. It showed you your sin and the penalty. But the Spirit gives life. It empowers you to actually change.
You're free from the law of sin and death. That law says, 'The penalty for sin is death.' But you're not subject to that law anymore.

'For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.'

Jesus bore the sentence. He took the condemnation so you wouldn't have to. And now condemnation is off the table for you.

II. The Indwelling Spirit and God's Family (Romans 8:5-11)

'The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.' Where does your focus go? What are you actually trying to achieve?

If your mind is fixed on the flesh—on pursuing comfort, pleasure, status—that leads to death. But if your mind is governed by the Spirit—focused on God's character, his kingdom—that leads to life.

'You, however, are not governed by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.' This is the reality for every Christian.
The Spirit isn't external pressure. The Spirit lives in you. Makes your body his temple. Constantly works to conform you to Christ.

'And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.'

The same power that raised Jesus from death is in you. That's not metaphorical encouragement—that's literal spiritual reality.

III. Children of God with the Spirit's Help (Romans 8:12-17)

'Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.'

You're free from condemnation, but you're not free from responsibility. You still have to choose. Will you follow the flesh or the Spirit?

But here's the difference: When you choose the Spirit, you're not trying harder. You're surrendering. You're saying, 'Spirit of God, have your way. Kill this in me.'
'For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.' You're not just followers of rules. You're children. You have a Father.

'For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."'

'The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.'

You're not slaves anymore. You're children. You have a relationship with God. That's the foundation of everything else.

Conclusion & Appeal

No condemnation. The Spirit indwelling. Children of God. This is the reality of the gospel.

So stop carrying shame. Stop assuming God is mad at you. Stop thinking you need to earn back favor.

You're his child. The Spirit of his Son is in you. And that's all the approval you'll ever need.
