Introduction

Paul has spent chapters explaining the gospel: sinners, justified by faith, dead and raised with Christ, transformed by the Spirit, no longer condemned.

And now he brings it to a crescendo: 'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.'

This isn't just comfort—it's audacious hope. In all things. Not just the good things. All things. And God uses them for our good.

I. Called According to God's Purpose (Romans 8:28-30)

'And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.'

God's ultimate purpose for you is transformation into Christ's image. Not comfort. Not convenience. Character. Becoming like Jesus.

And in that light, everything becomes useful. Your victories teach you about God. Your defeats teach you about your need. Your losses teach you about lasting treasure.

'And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.' This is God's unbreakable chain.

From foreknowledge to glorification—it's all secured by God. You're not holding yourself up. God is. He initiated it. He sustains it. He will complete it.

So when painful things happen, you can ask: How is God using this to make me more like Jesus? What am I learning? What's being refined?

II. More Than Conquerors Through Christ (Romans 8:31-37)

'What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?'

If the all-powerful God who created everything and sustains everything is on your side, who's big enough to be against you?

'He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?'

God proved his commitment to you at the cross. He sacrificed his Son. So don't doubt his provision or his protection now.

'Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is he that condemns?'

'No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.' Not just conquerors—more than conquerors. We overcome, and in overcoming, we grow stronger.

III. Nothing Can Separate Us From God's Love (Romans 8:38-39)

'For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.'

Paul systematically moves through the possibilities: Not death, which is the ultimate threat. Not life, with all its struggles. Not spiritual forces. Not time itself. Nothing.

Why? Because God's love isn't based on your performance. It's not conditional on your behavior or circumstances.

You can fail, and God loves you. You can sin, and God loves you. You can lose everything, and God loves you.

This is the climax of the gospel. Not just forgiveness. Not just justification. Not just the Spirit's indwelling. But unshakeable, unconditional, eternal love.

'This love is in Christ Jesus our Lord.' It's secured through him. He is the bridge between you and God's love. And that bridge will never break.

Conclusion & Appeal

The gospel of Romans is a message of cosmic security. You're not on probation. You're not wondering if God might change his mind.

God has committed to you. He's guaranteed it through Christ's death and resurrection. He's sealed it by his Spirit. And nothing—nothing—can reverse it.

So live from that security. Not because you've earned it, but because it's been given. You're loved. You're accepted. You're secure in him.
