Big Idea: Spiritual warfare is real. We're not fighting against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces. The key is to see with eyes of faith.

Introduction

Paul writes: 'Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.'

We live as if everything is physical. But there's a spiritual dimension to reality that's equally real and often more determinative.

The story of Elisha shows this. His servant is terrified because an enemy army surrounds them. Elisha prays: 'Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.' And the servant sees chariots of fire surrounding them on the mountain—the army of God.

I. The Reality of Spiritual Opposition (Ephesians 6:10-12)

'Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.'

Paul isn't speaking metaphorically. There's an enemy. The devil has schemes. We're in a real battle.

'For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.'

When we fight with people, we're often actually fighting against spiritual forces working through those people.

This doesn't absolve anyone of responsibility. But it helps us understand that mere human conflict often has spiritual dimensions.

The solution isn't to fight harder in the physical realm. It's to recognize the spiritual realm and stand firm there.

II. Eyes of Faith (2 Kings 6:15-17)

'When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. 'Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?' the servant asked.'

The servant is in panic. The physical threat is real. There are horses, chariots, soldiers. He can see them all.

'Don't be afraid,' the prophet answered. 'Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.'

Elisha's confidence isn't denial of the threat. It's perspective. He's aware of a spiritual reality the servant can't see.

'And Elisha prayed, 'Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.' Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.'

Once the servant's eyes are opened, his fear vanishes. He sees the army of God protecting them. The threat hasn't changed. His perception has.

III. Standing Firm (1 Peter 5:8-9)

'Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.'

Peter is direct: There's an enemy actively seeking to destroy you. He's not passive. He's prowling.

But the solution isn't fear or passivity. It's alertness and firmness.

'Because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.'

You're not alone in this battle. Believers everywhere are fighting the same spiritual forces. We're part of an army.

Standing firm means not backing down, not compromising, not surrendering. It means steadily holding the truth and God's promises against attacks.

Conclusion & Appeal

Spiritual warfare is real. The enemy is real. But so is God's army, God's protection, and God's victory.

The first step is to open your eyes. To see the spiritual reality alongside the physical. To recognize that you're involved in a battle.

But don't fight in your own strength. Stand firm in God's strength, with God's armor, as part of God's army.
